Where Can I Serve?

One of the most important values of Zion Lutheran Church is our mission to the world.  It begins in our own community and spreads overseas to every nation.  Zion members are involved in a variety of ministries from things as simple as bringing a box of food once a month to making quilts for families in Haiti and around the world, providing school supplies, serving summer meals for local children, and a host of other activities.

McGregor Food Pantry

Zion is thrilled to be part of the McGregor Food Pantry.  In conjunction with other churches in the area we gather donations of food and help distribute a weeks worth of groceries to families in our community that need a helping hand.  Please contact our church if you could benefit from this ministry or if you’d like to volunteer.

Westview Manor Monday Worship

Each Monday we visit our friends. In these 30 minutes, we sing hymns, pray, and share a Bible reading. We love it and so do they, come join us!

Quilters

We have an active group of quilters who annually make over one hundred quilts, most are sent to Lutheran World Relief and some are given to the McGregor Fire Department to comfort victims of fire.  Others go to Caritas and Mission Waco for the homeless and the needy.  This group also prepares school kits, health kits and baby kits for distribution by Lutheran World Relief. Got thimble? Come sew with us!!

Meals on Wheels

Several of our members volunteer to deliver meals in our community to older folks.  It is very rewarding helping our neighbors and the people appreciate the food and the fellowship of a nice “Hello” and an occasional hug.  Please contact the church if you would like to volunteer.

Thank You

Lutheran World Relief

Lutheran World Relief (LWR) Quilts and Kits give families throughout the world a helping hand, a sign of comfort and hope for the future. LWR’s Ministry is highly regarded around the world because of the quality and consistency of the quilts and kits we share.  Our group at Zion makes over 100 quilts each year for LWR and the McGregor community.  We also assemble Personal Care, School and Baby kits that aid those throughout the world despite the hardships they face.

Upbring, formally LSS

It’s hard to imagine…

that there are dark places in our society where children are so neglected, unloved, uncared for and, even abused that they must be removed from a home for their safety.  One of the missions of Upbring (formerly Lutheran Social Services) is to prevent this abuse, but when abuse occurs Upbring becomes a safe place for these children who often arrive with nothing.  Our opportunity is to do God’s work with our hands and provide these children with some simple needs.  Hand-made quilts, a unique gift for them, are being stitched.  Upbring has provided a list of other needs.

Zion Scholarship/Grant Program

Zion provides two sources of financial aid for its members who are pursuing further education in various fields. Our Lutheran understanding of vocation is that we can serve God and neighbor in a variety of careers and callings. Zion encourages individuals to do so by this program.
  • Zion Lutheran Church will provide a one time grant of up to $500 to members in good standing who are graduating from High School. Application can be made through the church office by April before graduation. Grants are presented during a worship service.

  • Zion Lutheran provides a renewable scholarship for members or children of members who are preparing for the Christian ministry. Depending on funds and the number of applicants, this scholarship can be from $250 to $750 per semester. Application forms are available through the church office.

Noisy Offerings

On the second Sunday of each month we have a “Noisy Offering”, the ushers go into the congregation with a can to collect loose change to aid different organizations in our community, country and throughout the world.  Examples of recipients include: Meals on Wheels, Mission Endowment Fund, Bread for the World, Let’s Do Lunch, Relay for Life, McGregor Food Pantry, School Supplies, Pack of Hope, and God’s Global Barnyard, to name a few.
